Feel a little more joie de vivre with a trip to the South Bank’s first south of France festival on Saturday August 31. From noon until 9pm in Bernie Spain Gardens (between the Oxo Tower and Gabriel’s Wharf) the Festival Sud de France celebrates all the Languedoc-Roussillon region has to offer. There will be sand castle building competitions on a purpose-built beach, regional delicacies such as oysters and duck confit brioche burgers and – this being a French fest – plenty of booze, with regional wines, aperitifs, and craft beers from a host of producers. There’s a book signing from Kate Mosse (4.30pm-5.30pm), whose best-selling books are set in the region; and DJ Gilles Peterson brings the party to a close in the evening with the sounds of Sète beach festival.

Sud de France Joie de Vivre Festival is at the Bernie Spain Gardens, South Bank, SE1 9PH. Waterloo or Southwark tube. Entry free.
