It’s always a little disheartening to see a pair of discarded shoes by the side of the road. Who did they once belong to? Where were they going and what sort of drunken escapade provoked someone to so callously kick them off?
Riff Raff, the production company behind a new pop up gallery and theatre may have the answers (albeit theoretical ones) to these and other discarded shoe questions. They’ll be exhibiting artworks and staging ten new short plays, all inspired by pictures posted from the twitter feed @abandonedshoes, which is devoted to sharing photos of forgotten and lonely-looking foot garments from around the UK.
Artworks include ‘Homeless People Have Rights’ from Australian artist Michael Keighery (pictured above) and the slightly grim ‘Hairy Shoe’ by Marie-Louise Jones. Lost Soles will open in Covent Garden, near lots of happy, waiting-to-be-bought designer shoes, and will be open from September 14 -22. The gallery, part of the London Design Festival, will have a corner where people can create their own art, inspired, of course, by mislaid shoes.
