It’s back: the one and only Scotch Egg Challenge. Right up there with the Turner Prize and the Man Booker Prize in the pantheon of British creative achievement, this annual cook-off (tonight, Tuesday Sep 17, at The Ship, Wandsworth) sees chefs from across the nation compete to make the best scotch egg, as judged in a blind tasting by a panel of industry experts.
Last year the top spot went to Berkshire’s Bladebone Inn, for their truffled duck egg with a potato and Parma ham breadcrumb, but who will be victorious this time? VIP tickets to the live event are already sold out, but you can turn up and enjoy Scotch eggs & Irish music in the bar; no tickets required for that part. Meanwhile, each finalist has also donated a dozen eggs to be auctioned off for humanitarian charity Action Against Hunger. Simply head to scotcheggchallenge.org now (bidding closes on the 20th) and win yourself a piece of edible culinary history. Your friends will be ‘eggstatic’ (arf arf). Tania Ballantine
