Waltham Forest introduces on the spot fines for spitting

Spare a thought for London’s sullen school kids, rogue pensioners and ageing punks. Why? Because one of their main weapons against society, spitting, is under threat, as councils across the city declare war on airborne saliva. Waltham Forest introduced an £80 on-the-spot fine last February and urged residents to report ‘spitting offenders’. Enfield passed a by-law to ban flying sputum this summer, and Sutton and Haringey are debating whether to do the same. Will Tower Hamlets, home of Spitalfields, follow suit? Katie Forster
