Help save the Rio Cinema in Dalston

One of London’s oldest and most beloved picture palaces is under threat, as a combination of sinking sales figures and increased competition threatens the beautiful Rio cinema in Dalston. A majestic single-screener showing a prime selection of quality blockbusters and indie charmers (plus late-night crowd-pleasers, Sunday double bills, festival titles and parent-and-baby events), the cinema is also famous for its ornate interior décor, and for being one of the key locations in 2011 rom-com ‘One Day’. It may be a little old fashioned – no gleaming cocktail bar full of speed-dating hipsters here – but that’s one of the things we love about it: sit back in one of its cosy, creaky seats, close your eyes and you could be in just about any decade since the birth of film.

You can help out the Rio by contributing, becoming a member, or simply by going to see a film: find the full programme at riocinema.org.uk
