When it comes to the internet and cute animals, we all go weak. Although Grumpy Cat (above) did help boost the rep of the world’s forgotten fugly fauna, the Ugly Animal Preservation Society is taking further action. The society, which is ‘dedicated to raising the profile of some of Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children’, are taking over the Book Club in Shoreditch on October 23 to champion one ugly creature as their mascot.

The night of live stand-up comedy (with a dash of science) will see comedians Simon Watt, Sarah Bennetto, Steve Mould, John Berliner, Martin Crosser and Helen Arney pick their favourite butters beast and at the end of the night the audience will name their favourite. Previous mascots of ugly have been the three-toed sloth, the blob-faced squid and the naked mole rat. Now stop giving those kittens so much attention and show these guys some love. Ally Swadling
