Express delivery: plans to reopen the infamous mail rail

Think the Royal Mail’s gone down the tubes since its stockmarket flotation? You’re right. Last week, the British Postal Museum & Archive in Farringdon submitted a planning application to reopen a section of track once used to shift mail between sorting offices. The underground system covered six miles between Liverpool Street and Paddington, but closed in 2003. (See some brilliant photos of the abandoned system here.) Even better, there are plans to let visitors ride a 1km loop of track under Mount Pleasant in a replica of a mail rail train. Will it be good? We imagine it’ll be first class…
