Four ways to celebrate the humble pumpkin this Halloween

Pumpkins. Not really anyone’s favourite fruit. Is it even a fruit? No one knows. Whatever they are, they’re in abundance at this time of the year, so we thought we’d give you some pumpkin related tips should you find one with a reduced price sticker in the supermarket.

1. Pumpkin as vehicle
Definitely the most inventive use of a pumpkin we’ve seen so far, this young chap from Hackney decided to turn his pumpkin into a boat. Apparently giant pumpkins naturally float and are completely waterproof. This could be a great traffic beating (and wonderfully amusing) commute to work down the Thames.

2. Pumpkin as drinks receptacle
The Oxo Tower is running a competition to find the perfect pumpkin. To enter, share a photo on Twitter or Instagram of your perfect pumpkin using #OXOpumpkin for the chance to win a bottle of champagne to be enjoyed in the restaurant. To be fair, they don’t actually say that you have to drink it out of the pumpkin but we reckon it would be the most fun way.

3. Pumpkin to keep the kids entertained
You can take the whole family to explore all there is to know about the varying shapes and colours of pumpkins at Kew Gardens. There’ll be workshop events with top pumpkin carving tips, a towering pumpkin pyramid and expert vegetable grower, Tony Finch, will be showing off his skills.

4. Pumpkin as delicacy
There’s a special day between Halloween and Christmas that serves as another excuse to get together with friends and family and totally overindulge in food and drink. That’s right, Thanksgiving. Grab a Yank and invite them round to yours for pumpkin pie. The taste of the pumpkin is mostly overwhelmed by the inherent risk of diabetes from all the sugar, but it’s definitely a treat you should experience at least once.
