What’s the nation’s favourite portrait? Why, it’s the Mona Lisa, duh! That’s according to Sky Arts, who have conducted a poll proving that we can’t get enough of Da Vinci’s shy smiler. But instead of hopping on a Eurostar and joining the queuing masses at the Louvre, anyone strolling on Clapham Common yesterday would have been able to see a giant version of the great lady herself.
But of course, this isn’t your standard Mona, oh no. This 14 metre-high canvas was created from selfies of the 84 contestants of new Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’ competition. Artist Quentin Devine turned the self-portraits into a Mona Lisa illusion on a 5 x 7 metre canvas, which is 85 times larger than Da Vinci’s real deal.
And just incase you were wondering, the other top portraits after the Mona Lisa were:
Marilyn Diptych – Andy Warhol
The Scream – Edvard Munch
Girl with a Pearl Earring – Johannes Vermeer
Self Portrait with Straw Hat – Van Gogh
Henry VIII – Hans Holbein the Younger
Ophelia – Sir John Everett Millais
Self Portrait – Rembrandt
Old Man in Military Costume – Rembrandt
Queen Elizabeth – Lucien Freud
Tune in to Sky Arts 1 tomorrow evening at 8pm to see the start of the competition. The winners will have their creations on display in the National Portrait Gallery. Follow the latest art news on Twitter at @TimeOutArt and for all your TV needs, follow @TimeOutTV.
