Didn’t your mother used to tell you that, ‘it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts’? Well, if, like me, you used to think ‘what a load of shit’, the time has finally come to be proven wrong.
Call it ‘loser’s luck’ if you like, but when it comes to reality show contestants, it’s the runners-up that often do the best, while the winners quickly fade into insignificance. When the 2009 edition of ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ aired, it was Steve Groves who won, but no-one remembers him now (in case you’re wondering, he’s now cooking at the deeply dull Roux at Parliament Square). Charming, lovely Marianne Lumb, with her beautiful, skilful, not-too-show-offy cooking, didn’t win on the day, but look at her now. All grown up, and with her own restaurant to prove it.
