You may know James Lavelle as the man behind UNKLE. Or as the guy who created his own record label, Mo’Wax, before his 20th birthday. Or perhaps you know him from any one of his many, many multi-disciplinary achievements spanning the last 21 years. Lavelle has such a huge range of projects under his belt it would be impossible to mention them all here. And he’s about to add one more. With 2014 just around the corner, the Southbank Centre has announced that Lavelle is to curate the notorious Meltdown Festival next June. So let’s get to know the man a little better:
What’s the deal with James Lavelle?
He’s a dance music producer. More specifically,Lavelle is a DJ, label owner and founding member of UK electronica outfit, UNKLE.
You could say he’s the man from UNKLE, then?
And you can expect that pun to be used many more times before the Lavelle-curated Meltdown festival opens in June 2014.
Whoa, he’s curating Meltdown!? That’s a big deal.
Indeed. Lavelle’s name was announced just this week. The Southbank Centre’s annual festival of music and culture always welcomes a big-name guest curator. Jarvis Cocker, David Bowie and Patti Smith have all helmed previous editions, with Yoko Ono in charge this year.
Those are all household names…
And while Lavelle isn’t, exactly, he does have the right musical pedigree. UNKLE collaborators have included Massive Attack, Thom Yorke and Ian Brown, while Lavelle’s Mo’Wax record label – which turns 21 next year – is responsible for putting out DJ Shadow’s sample-based hip hop masterpiece, ‘Endtroducing…’.
What does he have to say for himself?
‘Together we will push boundaries, shoot for the moon and create something that people will never forget.’
What does that really mean?
DJs, hip hop artists, fashionistas, vinyl junkies, random famous people and men wearing unnecessary hats will be heading en masse to the Southbank Centre. Join them for something electronic, eccentric and potentially excellent. Jonny Ensall
