Whether or not you think that turning Christmas lights on in mid-November is all a bit wrong, London’s festive wheels are well and truly in motion. Tonight, at 5pm, it’s the turn of the South Bank. This is actually one of the better lighting-up events – there’s no über-quiffed boy band doing the big switch, but the vibe is properly Christmassy, with a live quintet playing festive music and a German-style Christmas Market (there from now until December 24) as a back-drop.
So once you’re done admiring the London Eye and all the twinkly lights reflecting in the Thames, you can wrap your hands around a glühwein, chomp on a bratwurst, and shop for toys, gifts and gingerbread. There’s even a stall for kids to make Christmas cards. Hey, perhaps kicking off in November isn’t so bad after all. Tania Ballantine
