Strict vegetarians and vegans can’t eat or drink lots of things, of course, but one of them – boo! hiss! – is (usually) beer. To improve the clarity of a pint, most brewers use ‘finings’; these were traditionally made from egg whites, milk or fish swim bladders (ugh), though these days gelatin is standard. Which is better, but still not vegan.
That’s where those nice people from the Craft Beer Social Club come in – they’re hosting a Vegan Beer Weekend, showcasing ‘natural’ beers that are slightly cloudy in appearance because they don’t use finings. There’ll be plenty of beers to quaff, from breweries such as Hastings, Baseline Brewing, Arbor Ales, Pitfields, Five Points, Atlantic, Bristol Beer Factory, Steel City Brewing, Kubla, Windswept Brewing Co, Black Isle, Durham, Harbour Brewing Co and Wagtail. And vegan fast-food trader the Mighty Fork will be providing sustenance in the shape of its ‘organic tofu weiners’, aka hot dogs.
It’s all taking place at the cosy Craft Beer Social Pop-up Pub at 2 Tudor Grove, E9 7QL – a short walk from London Fields rail station. It’s free but you need to book in advance via their website. The pub is open every Friday and Saturday until mid December, and lots of other events, including beer tastings and ‘meet the brewer’ sessions, are planned. Bottoms up!
The Vegan Beer Weekend is taking place on Friday November 15, 6pm-midnight and Saturday November 16, noon-midnight. More information at thecraftbeersocialclub.co.uk
