Giant snow globe at Piccadilly Circus: Westminster council’s answer to vandalism

Eros Snow Globe

With the festive season rapidly approaching, London’s councils are pulling out all the stops to spread some Christmas cheer. For Westminster council, preparations this year include the creation of a 30ft snow globe encasing the statue of Eros at Piccadilly Circus. But this is no ordinary snow globe. It’s an anti-vandal globe, put in place to protect the statue over the Christmas period.

Created in 1892 by Alfred Gilbert in honour of  the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, the Grade I listed statue has been the target of several vandals over the years. The globe, which is made of PVC, will safeguard the statue while displaying Christmas messages from Westminster council, and circulating ‘snowflakes’ with the use of internal fans. Weird – we’d have thought more people would be attacking Eros on February 14, rather than Christmas…
