Well, the oldest part of the Grade II Millbank building is currently undergoing massive renovations led by architects Caruso St John, with a completion date of November 19. The main entrance will be reopened, there’s a new archive gallery, heaps of additional learning studios and the original Grand Saloon, which overlooks the Thames, will also be opened. But that’s not all. The most exciting part is the new cafe and bar for Tate Members which will be situated on the circular balcony of the domed atrium – an area that has been closed to visitors since the 1920s.
To celebrate and show off all the cool new space they’ve got, Tate Britain is throwing a big party with lots of live music, talks, workshops, film, performance, games and – of course – art. There’ll be music by Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) and James Blackshaw, free limited edition prints by Keith Coventry and Tate-related films screened by the Kino. If that’s not enough to get you into the party spirit, there’s also a treasure hunt with Tate Memberships, exhibition tickets and much more up for grabs.
The Tate Britain Housewarming is a free event taking place on November 23, 3pm – 10pm. For more information you can check out tate.org.uk
