Anyone who’s spent any time in Croydon town centre, namely the Whitgift centre and Centrale shopping centres, will know it’s not up there on the list of inspiring shopping experiences. That’s not to say it hasn’t offered riveting people-watching opportunities – as well as being a magnet for shop-lifters and various other ne’er-do-wells, its also been prime territory for observing the famous Croydon facelift (as favoured by Croydonite Kate Moss and even fellow fashionista Victoria Beckham in the past).
Fascinating hairstyles aside, the tired and sprawling city centre needs a makeover. Big time. So news that two of the world’s super-mall owners Hammerson and Westfield have come together with a £1bn plan to completely regenerate the city centre and create 600 new shops and restaurants and 5,000 jobs will come as welcome news to most CR1 folk. The scheme is waiting approval from the Mayor’s office but if all goes to plan, Croydon could become a shopping mecca by 2018. Now there’s a thought.
There’s up to 30% off at hundreds of stores this weekend at Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City.
