Not to be confused with Jekyll & Hyde, this is the name for a ‘new’ pub in Balham, occupying the site once home to Blythe Spirit. Its incoming owners (Antic, the same people behind the lovably quirky Balham Bowls Club) have given it their trademark ‘vintage chic’ styling, and created a relaxed space for the area’s young professionals to kick back over a pint or a casual bite.
As for the name, we can only speculate, as staff seemed as keen to find out as we were. Could Hagen be named for a legendary Germanic warrior; could Hyde be making reference to Balham’s Hyde Farm Estate (known as the Hyde during the Middle Ages)? Perhaps, perhaps. Only one thing is certain: it has nothing to do with Robert Louis Stevenson. Tania Ballantine
