An early Christmas quiz question: what do Adele, Emeli Sandé, Florence And The Machine, Jessie J and Ellie Goulding have in common, apart from the fact that they’re all British pop superstars who can sell out arenas at the drop of a hat? No ideas? Here’s the answer: since 2008, they’ve all won the Critics’ Choice gong at the Brit Awards.
Now we’ve got another name to add to that list: Sam Smith. No, not the old-school pub chain – we’re talking about Sam Smith the 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Hertfordshire, who smashed his way, Incredible Hulk-style, into the mainstream with two well-placed guest appearances: first on Disclosure’s ‘Latch’ (a key track on ‘Settle’, the best album of 2013), and then on Naughty Boy’s mega-smash ‘La La La’ (which has racked up more than 200 million YouTube views since April).
Smith got the nod today from the Brits panel, beating fellow nominees Chlöe Howl and Ella Eyre, and will pick up his trophy from last year’s winner Tom Odell at the Brit Awards show at The O2 on February 19. Weird and wonderful stuff happens every year at the Brits, so book your tickets now for maximum ‘I was there’ rights. Performances from Katy Perry and the Arctic Monkeys have already been announced, with more starry names sure to follow.
