The Bloomsbury branch of the long-established Chelsea VQ (formerly called ‘Vingt Quatre’, as in ’24’; geddit?) opened at the end of 2013 with the same USP – it’s open all day, every day, so if you’re in the West End and desperately need a chilli con carne at 5am, this is the place to come.
The diner-style interior is hidden in a side street off Tottenham Court Road at the Centrepoint end, right next door to the YMCA fitness club. The menu has few surprises: all-day (and -night) breakfasts, omelettes, chicken caesar salad, steak, apple crumble and custard, all simply but attractively presented. There’s also a small cocktail bar, though booze isn’t served between 2am and 8am. Importantly for a bar and diner that stays open after pub and bar closing times, and therefore has potential to become a magnet for the over-refreshed or infirm, how appealing and accessible are the toilets? Spotlessly clean when we paid a visit, with trip hazards helpfully marked with police-style hazard tape. Guy Dimond
