As a simply spectacular year for cinema draws to a close, we’ve been taking a look back at some of the most memorable movies of 2013. We’ve already made our list of the year’s 10 best movies, but now we’re narrowing our focus to pick out some of the single scenes we found most surprising, hilarious, shocking, powerful – or all of the above.
The list ranges from the sublime – including selections from ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’ (above), ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day’ and ‘Gravity’ – to the completely ridiculous – just who is that fop in the crazy warpaint? There were loads we couldn’t find room for – the madly intense ‘fall of Jerusalem’ sequence from ‘World War Z’, the shocking results of Michael Douglas’s plastic surgery in ‘Behind the Candelabra’, Ryan Gosling playing with his flick-knife at the beginning of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’, or indeed just about any shot from the gorgeous ‘The Great Beauty’ – but 10 is too small a number to summarise such a wonderfully cinematic year. Still, if there are any you really think we should’ve made room for, you can tell us all about it in the comments. We’ll see you in 2014!
