Restaurateur Mark Hix seems to be in danger of turning into Santa Claus – wherever you go in London, there he is opening yet another bar or restaurant, ho ho ho. Besides Hixter, which has a branch of his celebrated Mark’s Bar in the basement, there’s also a smaller, more bespoke pop-up version of Mark’s Bar in the unlikely setting of the Selfridges men’s shoes department. We passed by for a quick snifter (not something we’d recommend in a normal shoe store) and were pleasantly surprised by how civilised it all was, though we’re still puzzled by the huge statue of two mating hippos petrified in flagrante delicto before the the Oliver Sweeneys. Maybe it’s just as well for the hippos that Mark’s Bar is just for Christmas, and not for life. Guy Dimond.

Mark’s Bar at Selfridges shoe department, 400 Oxford St, W1A 1AB. Nearest tube: Oxford Circus. 9.30am-9pm Mon-Sat; noon-6pm Sun
