Walkie Scorchie tower gets some shades

Eggs frying on the pavement, carpets bursting into flames, paint melting off cars and people spontaneously combusting (ok, not the last one) – we all remember the ‘death ray’ glaring down from the Walkie Talkie tower that left things feeling a little too hot, hot hot during last summer’s heatwave.

To prevent the new skyscraper at 20 Fenchurch Street turning into a towering inferno of doom for a second year running, the owners are planning to fix some sun shades to the outside of the building to cool things down a tad. Expected to take about six months to install, the aluminium fins will sit between floors three and 34 and will probably cost somewhere in the single digit millions. And we thought designer shades were overpriced.

To relive some of the sizzling memories of the death ray, have a look at the Walkie Scorchie chronicles or check out what happened when we paid a visit to the death ray, otherwise known as 20 Fenchurch Street.
