That time of year is here again, a luminous green that would make Kermit proud becomes everyone’s default colour scheme and the dark Irish nectar that we call Guinness is consumed by everyone in sight; it can only be St Patrick’s Day. You don’t need too much advice on the correct protocol, (we’re guessing you’ll consume a tipple or two), but here are three events to get you in the mood for the big day.
FRIDAY 14 MARCH
St Patrick’s Day Shindig on The Thames, Victoria Embankment
As the Lonely Island’s 2009 hit reminded us, if you’re going to throw a party you need to do it on a boat and preferably with an auto-tuned rapper. Though Craic-it London can’t offer the latter, the former is guaranteed with a night of traditional irish music, DJs and plenty of drinks aboard the HMS President. With amazing night time views of a lit-up London and a complimentary drink on arrival, it’s a great way to start a weekend of Rugby and St Paddy’s day celebrations.

SATURDAY 15 MARCH
St Patrick’s Day Céili, Borough Hall, Royal Hill
For those looking for a more traditional way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, Greenwich Dance are offering up a night of lively Céili (irish folk dance to the uninitiated) with a professional instructor on hand to guide you through all the steps. Following the success of last year’s event, this year’s music will be provided by exuberant eight piece band, Threepenny Bit. Set in the 1930s surroundings of the art deco Borough Hall, the event is open to everyone from beginners to experts, besides, making a fool of yourself and having a good time is what the night’s all about.

SUNDAY 16 MARCH
St Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade,Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square hosts the capital’s annual celebration of Ireland’s patron saint with a parade on Sunday 16. With this year’s theme based around the ‘World of Dance’ there will be an array of exciting groups on show, alongside marching bands and iconic dance troupe Riverdance who will headline the event. There are performances from the cast of West End musical ‘The Commitments’, a London Irish comedy festival marquee and an Irish food market complete with culinary treats from the Emerald Isle. New for this year’s festival there will also be an official St Patrick’s Day ballroom dance in the plush surroundings of Westminster Cathedral in Victoria, fans of Strictly, this is your shot.
