Late-night levy? Sounds like a wizened old blues guitarist. But the real meaning is much less entertaining. Islington has become the first London council to adopt a government initiative that taxes venues for selling alcohol after midnight. A third of the borough’s 1,300 licensed businesses will soon have to stump up cash that will go towards funding an increased uniformed presence in the area. What can only be described as ‘the fun police tax’ will be enforced from mid-2014. Old blues guitarists would definitely not be down with that. Eddy Frankel
