If you were the sort of kid who forced your siblings to be your backing singers, or the sort of teenager that used MySpace for music uploads rather than emo selfies, you may well still be looking for that big break. And this could be it. As part of the #BackBusking initiative, the Mayor is inviting musicians aged 11-25 – whether solo artists, duos or groups – to enter Gigs 2014 and get their voices heard by thousands of Londoners this summer. Sure, BoJo may not quite be Simon Cowell, but hear us out.
The winners of the solo and duo categories will win a licence to busk on the London Underground, which is surely the ultimate captive audience, and often lucrative to boot. Other prizes include time in a professional recording studio and a slot in the line-up at the Matala Beach Festival in Crete. This is all just a small part of the #BackBusking campaign, which aims to keep our city’s air filled with great quality live music by making busking rules less complex.
