It was only last August – on the release of big-budget disaster ‘The Lone Ranger’ – that we at Time Out asked the question ‘Is it time for Johnny Depp to call it a day?’ Now his new film ‘Transcendence’ is arriving in cinemas (it opens on Friday April 25), and the question still lingers: does this once-mighty cinematic force have anything new to offer?
‘Transcendence’ sounded promising from the get-go: Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’ cameraman Wally Pfister was set to direct for the first time, and the cast includes such thespian heavyweights as Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall and Paul Bettany. The plot sounded fascinating – in the near future, with anti-technology terrorists running rampant, a genius computer scientist has his intellect transferred into the mainframe, and all hell breaks loose. So is this a return to form for our Johnny? Or just another expensive disappointment?
