The Great British Fair, Old Queen's Head

Islington pub the Old Queen’s Head is set to channel the fairground spirit for the second year in a row as it welcomes back The Great British Fair, which will transform the tavern into a British fun fair featuring games, live music and fresh food.

The ground floor will receive a thorough makeover in an attempt to replicate a traditional fairground scene, complete with a coconut shy, hook-a-duck and the unfailing emasculator, the test of strength. It’s yet to be confirmed but we’re guessing you’ll get the chance to win a giant plush bear – after all, isn’t that the whole point?

An outside food court will provide treats aplenty with a candy floss stall and an all-day BBQ to help fuel your return trips to conquer the fairground games. Meanwhile, the pub’s first floor will become an old-school big top, where a ringmaster will oversee live folk music, acrobats and a magic show. There’s also the opportunity to see what your future holds, with a fortune teller ready to read your palm or tarot cards. The event will run from 3pm and children are welcome to attend until 6pm, when DJs will take over from the fairground folk to keep the party going until the early hours of the morning.

The Great British Fair, Old Queen’s Head April 20 2014, 3pm-3am. Free before 7pm, £5 after.
