The third annual Rumble in the Jumble sale takes place this weekend, selling celebrity donations from music industry insiders including Lauren Laverne and Friendly Fires. Flo Wales Bonner sizes up the merchandise.
What little girl or boy doesn’t grow up dreaming that one magical day they might be able to purchase a pair of slippers once worn by Friendly Fires? This is one of the more esoteric lots in a sale of musical miscellany which also boasts designer clothing, records and merchandise donated by the great and good of the music biz. Rumble in the Jumble – a huge charity fashion market first organised by TV It-girls Gemma Cairney and Dawn O’Porter in 2012 – is back this Saturday to celebrate its third birthday. The idea is simple: get celebrities to donate their old clothes and knick-knacks, then invite you lot to rummage through them (and volunteer a bag of your stuff too). Proceeds go to Oxfam’s efforts to empower women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As with all jumble, it’s a mixed bag, and there’s some fast and loose application of the term ‘celebrity’ here (any takers for a shirt belonging to Jonathan from Everything Everything?). But organisers have coaxed quality items from the likes of Lauren Laverne (who has sportingly parted with Marc Jacobs dresses and a Lulu Guinness handbag) as well as Bat For Lashes, Anna Calvi and Paloma Faith, plus new stock from Topman, Whistles, Sonos and Marshall Amps.
There are also money-can’t-normally-buy goodies – Annie Lennox’s handwritten lyrics of ‘Sweet Dreams’, for instance, and the four-track recorder that Suede demoed ‘He’s Dead’ on. You might have to negotiate a few of Zane Lowe’s jackets to get to them, though. And therein lies the fun of it; don’t expect orderly queues – it will be riotous. Last year’s event turned up some real bargains: items were priced from a quid, Gucci shoes and Mulberry bags were on sale for £30. A new Burberry mac from Billie Piper was given away in a raffle – which beats the usual bottle of cava. On top of the shopping there will be the chance to get done up by Smashbox and Bumble and Bumble plus tea and cake and booze (Oval Space is mixing a special Rumble punch for the day) – all with the aim of getting people into the spirit. Because ultimately, Rumble in the Jumble is about raising cash and having a laugh – even if it’s just at Zane’s taste in jackets.
Rumble in the Jumble is taking place on Saturday April 26, 12-6pm at Oval Space.
