It calls itself ‘London’s biggest fashion night’– but what will be going on at Carnaby Street’s annual shopping party this Thursday? Flo Wales Bonner breaks it down.
This Thursday, the clatter of statement shoes will be heard across Carnaby Street and the surrounding area, as a shopping party kicks off at every store in the neighbourhood. From 5pm to 9pm, bargain-hunters and casual browsers are invited to join fashion brands including The Kooples, Dr Martens, Cheap Monday and American Apparel – which will all have 20 percent off their new collections. Entrance is free, but you need to register in advance to participate. And it’s not just the big high-street names lopping a fifth off their prices – this is a great opportunity to shop at niche and independent stores like Other/ shop (the retailer formerly known as B Store) – where you can find great designers including Sophie Hulme and Peter Jensen. Knock 20 percent off their prices, and you’re looking at quite a saving – perfect if you’ve been eyeing up a £400 investment bag. There’s plenty of slap happiness too, with discounts on products and treatments at top cosmetic counters including Illamasqua and Benefit.
If discounts alone aren’t enough to get you to Carnaby, there are other sensory delights, as the area harks back to its happening heyday with music and pop-up events. As well as various (admittedly not-exactly-chart-topping) bands striking up in stores, imaginative activities include free Lomography lessons in the company’s flagship store, beauty talks at Benefit, and even free facial-hair finessing – gentleman barber Pankhurst is offering complimentary beard trims and whisky on the night. If you find yourself dragging along a rather reluctant other half, tempt them with gratis fizz and oysters at Wright Brothers (Kingly Street) or complimentary spritzers from freerange chicken restaurant Whyte & Brown (Kingly Court). Then they might be too cross-eyed to clock your haul at the end of the night.
