Boozeflash: London’s pubs just got safer

The humble London boozer is an endangered species. Every year, hundreds of watering holes are wiped off the face of the earth or repurposed as flats. But fear not! Westminster Council wants to award pubs special status to protect them from developers. Currently, you don’t even need planning permission to convert pubs into retail premises, but Westminster’s proposal would see them put on the market for 12 months before any redevelopment can begin. Not quite as safe as (public) houses, but a step closer. We’ll drink to that.
