It’s one of the most eagerly awaited blockbusters of the summer – the return of that clumsy, skyscraper-sized beast from the depths, ‘Godzilla’. Eyebrows were raised when it was announced that relatively untried British director Gareth Edwards – whose only other film was the ultra low-budget DIY creature feature ‘Monsters’ – was to be put in charge of this epic multi-million-dollar undertaking. But hopes were raised, too – here, we thought, was a director who’d focus not only on the roaring, the stomping and the squashing, but on the human drama too. And when reliable actors like Bryan Cranston, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche and Elizabeth Olsen were signed up to support leading man Aaron Taylor Johnson, we got even more excited. Would this be a monster movie with brains as well as bulk? Or would it be just another empty cavalcade of giant-sized special effects?
