Grace of Monaco

The Cannes Film Festival opens in France tonight with the world premiere of ‘Grace of Monaco’ – with Nicole Kidman playing the 1950s film star Grace Kelly, who married a prince and died tragically in 1982. Our man in Cannes has seen the film and this is the point when fans of Kidman might want to look the other way: ‘Kidman’s breathless, blank performance does little to add life or credibility to a script that, looking on the bright side, might have audiences giggling for years to come.’ Oh well: there are plenty of other films to look forward to over the next ten days, with new films from Britain’s Mike Leigh and Ken Loach, Ryan Gosling’s directing debut, Steve Carell playing serious in ‘Foxcatcher’ and much more besides. We’ll be bringing you daily coverage of news and reviews from Cannes right up until the world-famous Palme d’Or is handed out on the night of May 24.
