Phyt club: medicinal urban garden pops up in Bethnal Green

Phytology Medicinal Meadow

Phytology may sound like the art of beating people up, but the truth is more sedate – and a lot safer. Phytology is simply the study of plants, but it’s also the name of a new project at the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve dedicated to bringing artists and botanists together to explore medicinal urban plants.

Organisers have taken over a corner of Bethnal Green’s cutest green space and filled it with what really amounts to no more than urban weeds, but with each plant having been selected for its medicinal properties. As well as being invited to explore the space and harvest some of your own medicinal herbs (not that kind), visitors can take part in artist or botanist-led talks, tours and discussions. Volunteers are encouraged too, so we can all get green fingered in the city.
