What do we want? To save Smithfield Market! When do we want it? On or before the August 12 decision deadline!

OK, so sometimes we’re not the best at protest chants, but we’re sure you sort of get the gist. Smithfield Market (or to give it it’s full and less glamorous name, ‘London Central Markets’) is the largest wholesale meat market in Europe. But on the eve of its 100th birthday, this little piggy’s neighbour, the General Market Building (GMB) and the Annex buildings next door to that, might be for the chop. They’ve been shut up for years but now the threat of partial demolition is looming and the boys with bulldozers are waiting by the door. However the ‘Save Smithfield’ cabal aren’t giving up that easily. They’ve got a host of broadsheet journalists, BBC celebs, local politicians and even Alan Bennett to help save Smithfield Market from the horrors of watercooler chat and tea rounds; that’s right folks, they want to turn the place into offices. Join the campaign to help save this London institution now. Alexandra Gerrity
