Festival season? Already? You bet your welly-wearing, cider-sinking ass it is, and who better to give you festival advice than someone who’s played about a million of them (give or take) with one of the UK’s most successful bands of the last decade: Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner.
When we chatted to Al recently about fame and fortune, he also kindly gave us his top tips on getting the most from your festival experience. Below are his gems of wisdom, and you can read the full interview here.
1. Start a band
‘That’s my main piece of advice. I went to Leeds festival twice when I was about 16 and 17. The following year we were playing in a tent there – much better! We never really considered going to any festivals down south. It just seemed too far away.’
2. Hang out with Lily Allen
‘The first time we went to Glastonbury was when we played it. I did the Stone Circle thing. I was dressed as a crocodile, because Lily Allen had a load of fancy dress costumes. I remember wrestling James from Klaxons in the mud as the sun rose.’
3. Don’t watch Metallica
‘I heard all the rumours [that they were headlining on Glastonbury’s Sunday – now confirmed]. I’m not sure it adds up. I know we’d buzz off it, but fundamentally could you have Metallica in the hippy nucleus?’
So there you go. Al is ready to hit the festival circuit and so are we. But don’t worry if you’re not prepared, because we’re here to help.
