Chiltern Firehouse – the new Ivy?

Chiltern Firehouse

Where should one take the visiting restaurant editor of Hong Kong Tatler? Not to Wong Kei, that’s for sure. Where the red carpet’s required, only the most sleb-tastic hotspot in London right now will do for Ms Mok – the one that London’s Tatler just named ‘Restaurant of the Year’, namely Chiltern Firehouse. Of course, dinner tables are impossible to get  – unless you’re a supermodel, A-list actor, or good friend of Gwyneth Paltrow. So we went at brunch, which is the perfect time to visit; not only are no bookings taken (11am-2pm Sat and Sun), which means you can actually get in if you arrive early, but in good weather you can also sit outside in their beautiful leafy courtyard. Of course, brunch in such a star-studded restaurant doesn’t come cheap – lobster and scrambled egg £18, spiced crab omelette £17, carrot cake £9, a healthy green fruit juice £6 – but you get to bask in the glow of a lovely setting, good service, and all the details being just-so. Best of all, if you’re publicity-shy, there are no paparazzi there at brunch time, so you can save the sunglasses for the sunny seats. Guy Dimond
