No, that’s not a typo. Selfridges’ flagship store is living up to its decadent reputation by splashing out on a whopping £300 million transformation and underground tunnel. ‘An underground tunnel, that sounds exciting!’, we hear you cry. Erm, well not really – its main purpose is to keep the staff out of the rain. Damn. Don’t click away just yet, as the genuinely exciting part is the fancy grand new entrance and the ten percent increase in retail space, which will make Selfridges the world’s largest destination for accessories. Impressive.
The 100,000 sq ft accessory department will cater for men and women with items ranging from high street bargains to luxury powerhouse pieces. It’s destined to become a handbag addict’s new favourite place, because by moving the store’s current office and delivery space, it will more than double the current luxury handbag department. This has been named ‘the biggest ever investment for a single project by a department store anywhere in the world’.
Now that planning permission has been granted, the work will start at the end of June, so in five years’ time the new and improved Selfridges will be ready to embrace the hordes of tourists and shopaholics itching to take a look around this epic store. We still just want to check out that tunnel, though.
