Hackney mechanic Errol McKellar is a real lifesaver; he’s offering his male customers discounts on their repairs and servicing if they go and get examined themselves. That’s right, a quick ten-minute cancer MOT means a cheaper service at his garage in east London.
So far his campaign has saved 23 men who weren’t aware that they had prostate cancer. Taking a trip to their GP saved their lives as well as a few bob.
Wondering what inspired Errol to do it? Well, in 2010 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a year later he had his prostate removed and he has since been given the all clear. Yay! His own personal experience inspired him to help raise awareness of the disease which is the most common cancer in men in the UK. So far he has spoken to around 3,000 customers. Nice work, Errol!
Here are a few facts and figures about the disease:
- Symptoms include an increased need to urinate and a feeling that your bladder still hasn’t been emptied.
- Getting checked at your GPs is really quick!
- One in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives.
- You’re at a higher risk of prostate cancer if you are over 50, black, have a family member who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer or breast cancer.
