If you like Nice Things On The Internet, you’ll probably already be familiar with Humans of New York. A deceptively simple Facebook page by Brandon Stanton, it pairs street portraits of everyday New Yorkers with an evocative quote from the subject, elicited by the artist’s disarming way of asking about their hopes, fears and life experiences. Its essential humanity has attracted over six million fans over the past four years, and resulted in a bestselling book.
So it’s no wonder that a gaggle of photographers are attempting to replicate Stanton’s success here in the Big Smoke. So far on Facebook you can find such pages as Humans of London (23,668 likes) Humans of London (21,667 likes) Humans of London (15,700 likes) Humans of London (the best one, albeit with only 7,549 likes) Humans of London (2,882 likes) and, looking a little wider, Humans of Greater London (1,823 likes).
And that’s not even all of them! Below, find some of our favourite shots and quotes from the myriad pretenders to the HoNY crown. First one to get a cease-and-desist from Stanton’s lawyer wins. But also loses, for obvious reasons.
