West End Live

It’s almost here again: the one weekend of the entire year when West End musicals become not only affordable, but actually free. Now celebrating its tenth year, the 2014 edition of West End Live with MasterCard returns to Trafalgar Square for Saturday and Sunday and includes not only the usual live excerpts from Theatreland’s biggest hits – from ‘Miss Saigon’ to ‘Matilda’ – but a special Sunday afternoon performance celebrating the biggest shows to close in the last ten years, including the likes of ‘Chicago’ and ‘Hairspray’. Not only that, but for the first time there’s a little something to cater to people who prefer theatre of the non-musical variety: head over to Leicester Square and a 1920s-style Spiegeltent will play host to talks and Q&A session from some of the most exciting shows in town, including chats with the casts of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and ‘Handbagged’.

And if you’re looking for something a little later and a little edgier, this weekend also sees the kick-off of the spectacular Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, where you can watch spectacular, one-off trial shows from some of the world’s finest theatre companies until late into the night.
