1. Jack White – ‘Lazaretto’

Sure, the deluxe ‘Ultra LP’ vinyl version of this album (featuring locked grooves, a hologram of an angel and more bells and whistles) is pretty snazzy. But you don’t need a turntable to get deep into the ex-White Stripe’s stomping blues riffs and plaintive country-rock… ★★★★☆

2. How To Dress Well – ‘What Is This Heart?’

It’d be easy to hipster-hate on Tom Krell, aka trendy producer/singer How To Dress Well, but his third album of stark, arty R&B is both forward-thinking and sexy: more than enough to justify his unwieldy stage name… ★★★★☆

3. Tom Vek – ‘Luck’

We waited ages for a third album from diminutive electropop producer Tom Vek. Fortunately, ‘Luck’ is well worth the three years he took to make it: he’s kept the bizarre factor of his early records, and added a new knack for intimate songwriting… ★★★★☆

4. The Antlers – ‘Familiars’

The arty Brooklyn trio return with a new album that’s as downbeat as anything they’ve done – but its haze of piano, brass and guitars is seductive and uplifting enough to make it an unlikely summer soundtrack… ★★★★☆

5. Clean Bandit – ‘New Eyes’

After dominating the charts with their single ‘Rather Be’, the London-via-Cambridge foursome follow up with a pure pop album that unites classical strings and house beats. It’s not edgy, but  with tunes this classy that hardly matters… ★★★☆☆
