Since the food businesses around Maltby Street started opening their doors to Saturday trading in 2010, the St John Bakery has become one of the most popular destinations in the area. Four years on and this purveyor of fine doughnuts, breads and other baked goods has decided to expand the Bermondsey operation with a weekend café/restaurant at Ropewalk. Open from 10am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, breakfast now features St John restaurant classics such as Welsh rarebit, eccles cake with Lancashire cheese and Old Spot bacon sarnies, while the blackboard menu of lunch options ranges from seasonal salads to dishes such as ox liver with beetroot, or brown shrimp with white cabbage. There will be a handful of wines to choose from, and dishes can be taken away.
