New film ‘Chef’ serves up some tasty food porn

Posted at 5:30 pm, July 5, 2014 in Arts & Entertainment, Food & Drink

There’s a money shot just minutes into ‘Chef’ that you’ll remember for a long time: a close-up of cheese oozing from a grilled sandwich, cooked on a griddle in the American way. This and numerous other moments of gratuitous food porn should arouse the interest of anyone who loves food trucks or US restaurants. But it’s primarily a feelgood movie about a once-respected chef down on his luck who’s fighting back from losing his job, a failed marriage, and is reconnecting with his estranged son. That’s already a recipe with too many ingredients, so perhaps it’s too much to also expect a plausible storyline; the chef’s love-hate relationship with a critic, for example, is just too hard to swallow. The constant overstatement of the power of Twitter also makes you wonder if the social networking site has shares in the movie. (It doesn’t.) But take the plot with a big pinch of salt and you’ll come out of this comedy with a smile on your face – and an appetite in your belly.
