London sure loves a good pop-up. Whether you want to sip some Pimm’s in a skip, get cheesy with a gourmet toastie or buy an arty souvenir, this week’s tip-top pop-ups have got it covered.
Banish images of miserable sarnies made from off-coloured, back-of-the-fridge cheddar. This is #notjustacheesetoastie – a proper gourmet grilled cheese sandwich inspired by America’s love of extra cheese and made using English organic sourdough with a signature three-cheese blend of farmhouse cheddar, cow’s mozzarella and aged gruyere. Souvenirs needn’t always be tacky, tasteless tat. ‘Souvenir’ is a stylish pop-up selling quality London souvenirs that you’d genuinely love to have in your living room. From festival wallpaper to handprinted linocuts and the Tate screen-printed onto discarded books, each piece is designed and made in the UK. When you’re crammed onto the tube dreaming of grassy parks and a Pimm’s picnic, you’ll be glad to know about the two summer-themed skips popping up at Great Queen Street. These two ordinary skips have been transformed into gardens offering a refreshing beverage and ‘the sweet sounds of singing birds’ – assuming there’s no real construction work going on nearby. If the weather man is right and it does end up raining all week, the Potting Shed Skip offers shelter, a cucumber sandwich and glass of Pimm’s served by ‘workmen waiters’. This AmeriKorean street food van is filling the summer air with the scrumptious smell of BBQ. Feast on Busan’s burger made from 28 day-aged rare breed British beef burger smothered in Bulgogi soy marinade and topped with mustard-pickled onions, or their sweet and spicy pork belly bun with gochujang sauce and mooli slaw. They’ve even crafted a selection of Korean-inspired cocktails to wash it all down. It’s all happening in London’s oldest surviving warehouse built by the East India Trading Company. Blooming lovely boutique London florist Ladybird offers last minute flower buyers the chance to purchase some individual innovative floral creations at its first pop-up flower shop. FRESHLY FROZEN ICE CREAM
No need for industrial freezers at this ice cream pop-up. Churn2 will be freezing ice cream on demand in a shipping container turned laboratory at Somerset House using liquid nitrogen. Choose from strawberry cheesecake, lemon and basil, chocolate coconut, or a special popcorn flavour for a true film feast.
