From this Saturday, Hackney Wick will be home to a weekly style market with food, booze and music (and no, it’s not in a warehouse). Flo Wales Bonner gives you the fast facts.
The Wick, dreamed up by clubland It-girls Liz Mendez and Sonia Anderson, is a market with more. The new weekend shopping spectacular will bring fashion, music and fun times together in one place. The pair are known for throwing wildly popular events in weird spaces around the world, and at festivals like Glasto and Secret Garden Party. They even used to run a club night in an old Victorian toilet (hence their alter ego ‘Kubicle’). Wick will take place in Hackney’s Old Roman Baths, but we’re assured this event won’t be a wash-out. Liz says it will be ‘more than just a party – everyone’s a bit over that. It’ll bring together the best of style, gourmet food and music, and will be a mini-festival for the local community.’
The shopping will take place in the Old Roman Baths’ huge garden, half of which will be devoted to stalls selling designer and vintage clothing, as well as a handpicked selection of midcentury modern home decor. The other half will be home to – and why not? – a pop-up beach complete with tiki bar, hot tub and food shacks. The stalls start packing up at 6pm, and the party heads inside with DJs spinning house and cosmic disco into the night. Sound like a lot to take in? This event probably isn’t for you then, gramps.
Liz has a style background; she runs her own label The Gypset Diary making, naturally, in-your-face sequinned partywear favoured by the likes of Kelis and Jaime Winstone. She admits that the wares on sale are ‘stuff that me and Sonia really like. You won’t find anything at the market that we’re not really into.’ The inaugural event will see bikinis from Mona Swimwear and carefully curated vintage from Lucy in Disguise alongside The Ragged Priest’s hip womenswear and printed bodycon separates from Puckoo Couture. Plus much more, with prices from £2 to £200.
Alongside the shopping there’ll be feasting, with a regularly changing line-up of food vendors. The launch event will have its own ‘Pizza Surgery’ turning out stonebaked slices, and there’ll also be a jerk chicken shack, gourmet cocktails and ales at the bar. Liz promises that future markets will feature ‘handpicked foodie elements drawing on local places like Broadway Market’. Yum.
The first market will see 20 to 30 vendors, with the number planned to increase in coming weeks. ‘We want this thing to grow organically,’ says Liz. ‘The space is so huge that you never know what might pop up.’ Our guess is that whatever it is, it will probably involve a party.
