We’re really hoping Tooting Arts Club‘s new theatre project isn’t just a ruse to lure audiences to their untimely deaths.
The excellent fringe company are planning to stage an intimate production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s 1979 musical ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ in Harrington’s, the oldest pie and mash shop in London (it has been going over 100 years). The notoriously gruesome musical tells of Sweeney Todd, the serial killer who murders people in his barber shop then gets Mrs Lovett to shove them into her amazing-tasting pies. What’s more, just across the road from Harrington’s in Tooting, a barber has agreed to let their shop be used as a bar and box office for the show. Is this all getting a little too convenient for you?
Fear not, this should be a fun new version of the brilliant musical and a chance to treat yourself to a pre-show portion of pie and mash… if you’re brave enough.
Due to open in October, the show will seat only 32 people and the company are mounting a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the project. Check it out here.
