She was the grand dame of stand-up, and influenced so many comedians, but yesterday Joan Rivers died at the age of 81. Last week she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest during a procedure on her vocal chords, and she had been on life support since.
We love Joan Rivers here at Time Out, and she loved London. She visited and performed here often (her ‘Before They Close the Lid’ tour was due to play the Royal Albert Hall next month) and we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing her many times.
So, to pay tribute to the Brooklyn-born comic, we’ve rounded up her most controversial moments, including jabs at Sarah Palin, Whitney Houston, Fox News and the Anti-Defamation League. It was never too soon for Joan Rivers, and we’re sure she’d be cracking sick jokes about her own death if she could.
If you need more of a Rivers fix, you can read about Time Out’s CEO (and former Comedy Editor) Tim Arthur’s Topshop shopping trip with Joan Rivers (he had a blast). She also took Time Out New York on a tour of her boudoir, and Time Out Chicago talked to her about wealth, plastic surgery and Slankets.
She’ll be missed, but she made sure she won’t be forgotten.
TfL paid a fitting tribute this morning:
