Romford Road Sainsbury’s in Stratford just became the most famous supermarket in the country – but probably not for reasons the grocery chain would like.
Chris Dodd, a freelance TV producer spotted an unusual sign in the window of the store while on a shopping trip earlier this week. Rather than informing shoppers of new deals or healthy living recipes, the sign encouraged employees to get customers to spend more cash.
Obviously intended for staff eyes only, the poster says: ‘Fifty pence challenge. Let’s encourage every customer to spend an additional 50p during each shopping trip between now and the year end.’
The picture has now been shared thousands of times on Twitter, with shoppers suggesting comical ways staff could get people to spend more – from swiping 50p items twice to shoving items in customers’ baskets while they’re not looking.
Meanwhile, at the Co-op on Hackney Road, Christmas has arrived.
