As you’ll probably remember, in 20-year-old feel-good flick ‘Forrest Gump’, Forrest (Tom Hanks) is a big-hearted but small-brained boy from Alabama who fights in Vietnam alongside his friend ‘Bubba’ Blue. The pair plan to become shrimp fishermen together after the war. However Bubba – spoiler alert! – never makes it home. Sob. But Forrest does name his shrimp company in his friend’s honour.
Two years after the film came out, in 1996, a movie-themed restaurant called the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company opened in Monterey, California. Fast-forward and the newest of its 40 worldwide franchises has its opening today in the troubled waters of London’s Trocadero. With branches everywhere from Bali to Tokyo, they must be doing something right, as clearly someone is buying all those t-shirts, souvenir mugs and an entire shop’s-worth of merchandising.
