Those of you strolling past Covent Garden Market on Thursday (October 2) may have seen the old historic building breaking free from its surroundings and hovering magically in mid-air. Oh, you missed that? Well you’ve got until October 24 to check it out.
Alex Chinneck’s new contemporary art installation ‘Take my lightning but don’t steal my thunder’ is like a magic act, creating the illusion that part of the building is levitating ten feet above the ground. And though we know this can’t be the case, it’s pretty darn convincing.
If you’re baffled by Alex’s mind-boggling work then you can learn all about his artistic trickery at an evening of talks in Covent Garden’s Market Building (Wednesday October 15 from 6.30-8.30pm).
Here’s the installation in numbers:
500 hours of digital carving
100 contributors, including a robot
14 tonnes of steel to create the structure
4 tonne counterweight allowing the building to levitate
1 tonne of paint to help the installation blend into the rest of the Market Building
